I often find spare red stones near our house at Ratnagiri, India. We call it chire khan (chira is the red stone and khan is a quarry). Used in construction, these stones are larger and stronger than bricks and do not need any kilns as they are crushed and taken out in required shape and size on site.
The stone is treated as minor minerals and therefore stone quarrying does not attract the provisions of Environmental protection act. Stones fall under the control of state government. The Government of Maharashtra has guidelines for environmentally sound operations for stone quarries.
