Google Doodle pays tribute to Mario Miranda, an Indian cartoonist on his 90th birthday

Google today celebrated renowned Indian cartoonist Mario de Miranda’s 90th birth anniversary with a doodle honouring the artist. Miranda who developed his own independent style of creating cartoons and characters, is remembered for his lavish works in The Times of India and The Illustrated Weekly of India, besides several other newspapers, periodicals and books. Mario Miranda’s 1987 cartoon captured the suddenness of environmental degradation and the Goan artist’s inability to process the altered landscape before him. Read more

Government saves Rs 21,000 crore in LPG subsidy

Government has saved over Rs 21,000 crore in cooking gas LPG subisdy in the last two financial years as paying the dole directly into bank accounts of actual users helped eliminate duplicate connections as well as diversions, Oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan said. The government began paying subsidy directly into bank accounts of cooking gas consumers in select districts from November 2014 and in the rest of the country from January 1, 2015. Urban toilet mission falls way short of target at just 54%

In what should come as a wake-up call for the government, construction of household toilets in urban areas in 2015-16 achieved just 54 per cent of the target while the figure was 68 per cent for community and public toilets. Data submitted by the urban development ministry to Lok Sabha shows that against a target of constructing 25 lakh individual household toilets, only 13.2 lakh were actually built. Work has commenced on 24.6 lakh more such toilets, the ministry said, which is expected to push the pace of completion during this financial year. Read more

Grains rotting with FCI could have fed 8L for a year

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has allowed 46,658 tonnes of foodgrains to rot in its 1,889 warehouses across the country in three years, while another 143.74 tonnes were reported stolen. Together, this could have fed nearly 8 lakh people from priority families under the National Food Security Act for an entire year. Read more
